UX Research and Design

Why do some digital products work – while others quietly fail?

At DONE, we’ve been building digital products long enough to recognize a recurring pattern. A digital project rarely underperforms because it lacks a key feature, has weak visuals, or overwhelms users with too much information.

Through UX research, we can help uncover exactly these issues. Our research provides answers on how interfaces can perform better both functionally and visually to deliver real business results.

What does UX research look like in practice?

In theory, UX research is about users, but in reality, it is about mapping the gaps that emerge between business goals, technological possibilities, and users’ real needs and/or capabilities.

For a complex project, UX research is not a step you can afford to skip, as rethinking a wireframe is still significantly less work and cost than completely redesigning a finished product.

During UX (User Experience) research, we examine how a product behaves when someone actually starts using it, while during UI (User Interface) examination, we look at how this behavior is presented visually. Research can be conducted in one area or the other, though they do not solve the same problem. A strong visual layer can support clarity—but it cannot replace it. Likewise, solid UX on its own, without a well-considered interface, can easily go unnoticed. This must be weighed when choosing the research type.

Research methods – chosen with intent

During UX research, we collect targeted observations and user feedback, which help identify the most critical usability issues early on.

We choose a research methodology based on the depth required to uncover the problem. Our most frequently used methods include conducting interviews, usability testing, card sorting, or survey-based research.

When does skipping UX research become risky?

In practice, UX research often leads to tangible improvements. This may involve simplifying a registration or purchase flow, restructuring a complex navigation system, or uncovering why users drop out at a specific step. In many cases, just a few targeted research activities can result in noticeable gains in usability and business performance.

For these reasons, we specifically recommend building a UX research phase into the project in the following cases:

  1. When launching a new digital product.
  2. In cases of unexplained drop-off or low engagement.
  3. To support user understanding of complex processes.
  4. When launching projects with high development costs.

UX design after research

During user experience design, we organize research data into a logical framework. The output is a wireframe made of grey “boxes” and simple buttons, designed to clarify page structure, navigation, and functionality. For presentation purposes, we build an interactive prototype in Figma based on the completed plan, through which we demonstrate the user journey.

The UX plan receives its “colorful coat” during the UI design process, resulting in the final, complete visual plans for the website.

When do we recommend UX design?

The business advantage of a UX design phase is that we don’t experiment on live users; instead, we hand over a validated, business-stable plan for UI design and development, minimizing the cost of later fixes. Therefore, we highly recommend creating wireframes whenever a task involves complex business processes, special functions, or intricate page structures.

Pricing of UX tasks

The pricing of UX research is unique and needs-based, as every project comes with its own set of questions and challenges to resolve. In some cases, a few days of focused work are sufficient; in others, the scope of the project requires several weeks of in-depth research.
